Web Development Skills

I've worked on the web for the last 10 years, and have done all kinds of CGI, content and application development. More recently I've done more database-driven work including XML, SQL Server and VB / ASP front ends. Since 2000 I greatly prefer working in OOP paradigms.

I work in fhe following languages:

  • Python
  • Perl
  • XML / XSLT / XSD
  • Visual Basic / JScript
  • SQL Server
  • JavaScript
  • Flash / ActionScript
  • Director / Lingo
  • PHP
  • MySQL

Python

I learned Python in order to extend Zope. I was looking for a web-based application framework and Zope seemed to fit the bill. At the time, there was only the Zope Book to guide me, and O'Reilly's Python books. I learned to love Python  for its clarity and OOP underpinnings. I've used it as a desktop scripting language on both Macs and PCs to generate file and folder structures, extract HTM-based content that I then wrote to XML, and doing data extraction using the ODBC module.

Perl

I learned Perl about 2 years ago when I took over maintenance of some intranet license application forms used by Kodak's then Health business (now Onex). From there I started developing localizable Dealer Locator applications using simple flat files for Kodak's Document Imaging business. Perl shows that I am able to rapidly learn and understand most scripting languages.

SQL Server

My first work with SQL Server 2000 was in 2003 at Neo/SCI where I maintained and administered both local and hosted instances. This included managing users and permissions, but I did little actual development work. At Neo/SCI I helped build an application delivered on CD that used the Valentina database with Adobe Director as a front end. This data application allowed users to search the entire Prentice Hall Grades 6-8 Science textbook library for lab materials by book, chapter, section, lab and free text, and then print a faxable order form.

In 2007 I have been driving delivery of a new Dealer Locator for all of Kodak's Graphics Communications internal and external resellers and support staff. This involved both migrating to a new hosted system, cleaning up the existing data mess, and QA of the new system.
